What are Dental Crowns?

3d render of dental crown and toothA dental crown is a restoration made to feel, function, and look exactly like a natural and healthy tooth. Traditional crowns work by covering the entire structure of a severely damaged, worn, or decayed tooth. When placed, these restorations reestablish the strength of teeth while also protecting them from further harm. Crowns can even replace a single missing tooth when attached to one dental implant.

When Would I Need a Crown?

Dental crowns can be used as a stand-alone service or in combination with other treatments. This makes them versatile, which can help to address various dental health issues. With crowns, our general dentist can:

  • Attach a dental bridge
  • Protect a weak tooth
  • Replace one tooth with a dental implant
  • Reshape worn down teeth
  • Address severe tooth discoloration
  • Restore a severely cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth
  • Protect and preserve a tooth after root canal therapy

What is a Dental Bridge & Why Would I Need One?

3d render of dental bridgeA dental bridge often consists of two or more crowns used to bridge the gap between healthy teeth and those lost. Gaps left by missing teeth can lead to dental and overall health complications like an unhealthy bite, uneven wear, gum disease, and poor digestion.

Bridges address these issues by replacing missing teeth and filling in the gaps for good. These restorations can either use natural teeth on each side of the gap for support or use two or more dental implants for a permanent anchor.

Which is the Right Bridge Option for Me?

To determine which restoration option is right for you, Dr. Abells first conducts detailed consultations and smile exams. During your visit, our dentist takes time to discuss your treatment needs and goals and address any concerns you may have. These factors, as well as your current oral health, can decide the type of restoration chosen.

Digital x-rays deliver clear images of your teeth, gums, roots, and jaws. Intraoral cameras provide you and our team with a live stream of pictures as we examine your teeth, gums, and more. We use these advanced technologies to offer accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

What is the Process of Getting a Crown or Bridge?

senior woman checking out her new smile in dental officeDr. Abells uses two types of Zeiss microscopes, so nothing is missed when preparing your smile for crown or bridge placement. Your crown or bridge often requires two separate appointments. If your treatment involves receiving a crown or bridge supported by implants, the number of appointments can vary.

Some shaping of the tooth or teeth is necessary. This gentle shaping only removes enough enamel so that your restoration can fit over your tooth properly. We take impressions of your smile, which are sent to trusted labs to craft your custom restoration. Typically, it takes about ten to fourteen days for our team to receive your new restoration. Once complete, we invite you back to our office to place your permanent crown or bridge.

How Long Can Crowns & Bridges Last?

With proper care or good oral hygiene, crowns and bridges have been known to last up to fifteen years. However, their longevity depends on several factors. To help get the most out of your custom crown or bridge, avoid biting your nails and grinding your teeth, and never use your teeth to open things. These habits can damage your restoration, which may require replacement.

Caring for Your Crown or Bridge Properly in 7 Steps!

After placement, maintaining your new crown or bridge is important. While these restorations are durable, there is still a chance they could become damaged, decayed, or worn without proper care. Below are seven tips we recommend to help you keep your crown or bridge looking, feeling, and functioning well.

  1. Brush your teeth every day and night for at least two minutes every time.
  2. Be sure to floss between every tooth at night or after every meal, if possible.
  3. Swish with mouthwash for up to one minute, day and night.
  4. Drink plenty of water to help keep your mouth moisturized.
  5. Limit or try to avoid eating hard, brittle, and sugary foods. These increase your risk of decay and damage.
  6. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products, and limit alcohol consumption.
  7. Be sure to visit our dentist every six months for your routine cleanings and exams.
